In August we reported on the Cogburn CG4, a fat bike designed for hunters. The high-end bike ($2,199) has a scabbard for a gun, bow or fishing pole, 3.8-inch fat tires and a camouflage aluminum frame.
There is no denying that e-bikes bring a whole new dimension to the term drivetrain, and with them come new players to the world of mountain biking. Bosch, Shimano, Brose and Yamaha are vying for pole position in this burgeoning category.
For one of our earliest e-bike group tests back in August 2016 – in association with JE James – we selected three full-suspension bikes from the biggest conventional players, albeit each with a different motor…
Contrary to popular opinion, the fastest electric bikes in the world right now were built in  garages, not in factory workshops. Maybe its because companies are not interested in making illegally fast electric bikes because of liability, maybe there isn’t enough profit in making expensive and fast electric bikes, or maybe companies lack innovation and are waiting for individuals to make the bold steps forward. For whatever reason DIY garage-built bikes right now are the fastest electric bikes on the planet. I can put it this way, when Specialized announced last month that they were releasing the “worlds fastest electric bike” with a 25o watt motor, there were chuckles heard from garages everywhere. Some of the bikes on this list put out 200,000 watts. And racing any of these bike against the Specialized would be like racing a Hyundai against a Formula 1 car. This is a list of the 10 fastest electric bikes that we know of right now. No marketing BS here.  To qualify for this list, the builder must have shot a Youtube video that illustrates the claimed speed of the electric bike. As we know the electric bike world is full of exaggerators…DIY builders being no exception. All the people on this list are respected builders, and are named by their Endless-Sphere forum handles. Endless-Sphere is the hang out spot for DIY builders and hot rodders. On this list  are some of the biggest names in the DIY community. There are a few (very expensive)  commercially available E-bikes that would make it to the middle of this list, but we have excluded those for now and will celebrate  those instead  in this  story… Top 10: The Fastest Commercially Available Electric Bikes. This here  list is to honor the achievements in the DIY community:
The earliest episodes with John Amos as the captain were silly. His continuing bad attitude toward them in the face of their success was unrealistic. Beyond that, however, the entire series was great. It suffered some after Stepfanie Kramer left, but it was still good.
It seems the “enduro” mtbing category has pretty much ripped off the Enduro dirtbikers completely. First, the helmets, then the racing format (Time trial electric hunting bike discounts then the fannypacks for tools, now even Schwalbe’s “new” tire chambered system copies the motos! What’s next? The engine? Oh wait…
First and foremost, make sure that when wiring the lights and front switch you measure and connect your wires without them connected to the batteries. (This will prevent damaging your switch or newly purchased lights.) My main wiring goal was to power the head lights, the front horn, and tail lights all with one set of wires from the batteries.
To all that sit back and bash fanny packs, have you actually worn any of the products tested? Have you ever felt how nice it is to have nothing on your back and shoulders? A relatively small load – what, 3-4 pounds max? – carried by a well-designed waist strap is not going to constrict your waist or hamper breathing. Since you’re probably shuttling up, instead of earning your descent, there’s not going to be much huffing and puffing anyway if your body protests. Also, those of you with a waist size larger than your hips are inherently exempt, since the pack will constantly be sliding off your [trendy and expensive beer] gut…
The Genesis is a winner in regards to durability, as it features a machined aluminum riser and ProCam and machined idler wheel. The limbs are competition composite and the cable guard is Teflon coated stainless steel.
Fanny packs. If enduro wasn’t already the lamest marketing trend since 27.5″ wheels, the ass backwards 80’s fanny pack has suddenly reared its ugly head in some misguided sort of pseudo euro fashion statement. Damn it.
If there’s one category in mountain biking that polarizes opinion more than any other it’s ebikes. It’s a complex debate that charged further because of issues with land access, trail sustainability and even the legislation governing the maximum speed of the bikes.
Two big trends that have stormed the bicycle industry over the past few years are pedal-assisted electric drivetrains and fat tires. These two trends converge in Defiant Bicycles’ Big Easy. Unlike other electric bikes that stop at the edge of the street, the Big Easy keeps rolling over some of the toughest, most sluggish terrain on Earth – everything from hot sand to cold, mushy snow.
If you’re completely new to ebikes, check out this short video overview and e-book guide that’s free on Amazon if you’ve got Prime. It’s full of pictures and examples to get you acclimated to the space. I’ve also done an in depth video interview about ebikes with my uncle since he has been riding one to work every day for over a year now.
The exciting thing about the Cube Agree is that it actually looks like a road bike. There are a few companies pioneering “normal” looking electric bikes, and it’s all possible thanks to the Fazua motor and battery.
One day I became fed up with all of my excuses for driving to work every day. During the summer I would ride my bike, but it would come in waves without any consistency. There is one huge hill climb to get to my work that is quite daunting, and is the main reason why most people take a vehicle, especially when you are running late. One day I said, screw it — I am going to put together an electric bike.

There are two small pockets made of fine mesh. They’re not ideal for anything you’re afraid might poke through, but are very light weight. The entire pack is backed by a well ventilated mesh and foam liner.
The Canadian government announced national parks will now be free for people 18 years old and younger. The move is part of Canada’s 2018 federal budget, and follows the success of 2017’s free parks project.
One of the most affordable recumbent tadpole trikes I’ve tested, you do have to pay an additional $350 for shipping but it comes “ready to ride” so you can hop right on. The 48 volt battery supports increased power and higher speeds for the 500 watt internally……
While the Outfitter was intended for hunters, we think it will suit anyone who wants to bring lots of gear into the woods under their own power—with some help from that Bosch eDrive. Several photographers remarked that the set-up is ideal for lugging professional camera equipment in for a shoot, says Felt Sales Manger IanMcCabe. And you can always carry beer. One hundred pounds of beer.
I then drilled a 3/4″ hole in the battery box to mount the keyed switch, followed by connecting the positive lead cables to the appropriate terminals on the switch assembly as indicated on the package material. With each wire connection, I made sure to use heat-shrink tubing at each cable termination. I then measured, cut, and installed the positive and negative cables needed to extend from the battery box to the XT90 connector and cable that connects to the motor. The motor came with an extra female end XT90 connector which I soldered onto the negative and positive cables from the battery box. I also use this female XT90 connector when charging the battery pack using the smart charger, since it has alligator clips and connects quite easily.

Brush motors are common because they’re durable and rather inexpensive to produce. However, modern brushless motors are lighter, smaller, and more powerful than brush motors, and they can be almost silent. E-bikes with brush motors cost more, but they require no maintenance. As a result, most electric bikes now have a brush motor.
I love the CB4 and what it means for future tools that allow me to easily hunt from a bike. I hope that means more innovative scabbards, gun racks, frame bags, panniers and trailers designed for hunting.
I have done over 200 km on this bike so far and it lives up to its specs, especially its top speed and acceleration. There are bikes out there, specifically the Specialised Turbos, which are similar in specs but much higher in price point (+$2000) – so its definitely competitively priced. The only issue I have had on it is the battery life. However that’s because I am 104 kg and my backpack is usually 6 kg and I always ride it in the highest power output level, the higher gears, with little or no peddling, and I live in a hilly area (some hills being 50% incline) – so its expected I would get less range (I get a range of 15 km).
